Shimba Hills Reserve – Home Of The Rare Sable Antelope

Depart from your hotel at around 0730 hrs in the morning and drive for almost 50 minutes to Shimba Hills National Reserve in a pop up roof van accompanied by our knowledgeable driver guide. Visit to the Sheldrick’s waterfall – an awe inspiring 21 meters (68 feet) waterfall which forms a plunge pool at the bottom and where visitors are allowed to swim. Upon entry formalities in the reserve, an armed wildlife ranger will take you to the waterfall along the 2 km footpath, through a forest. Along the way, he will point out different species of plants and animals and their significance to the eco-system.

Afterwards, you will embark in your van and make a stop over at the famous Pengo hill viewpoint which is the highest point(450 m) within the Shimba Hills national reserve. From this view point spectacular view of the Tsavo plains, Taita Hills, wildlife and sorrounding grasslands can be seen. This Trip also gives you a chance to explore the largest Coastal Forest in East Africa after the Arabuko-Sokoke. At Shimba you can have a chance of spotting Kenya’s last remaining herd of the rare Sable Antelope. The Reserve is characterized by rolling hills blanketed by coastal forests with over 50% of the rare plants in Kenya found here including rare cycads and stunning orchids. Around noon, you will proceed for lunch and relaxation before deciding either to go for an afternoon game drive or drive back to your residence in Diani.
