Get to explore the historic Fort Jesus built by the Portuguese to protect their trade route. The fort is an iconic landmark and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its significance in the History of East Africa. Learn about the insights of the fort, history of Mombasa,
Fort Jesus (museum) – related to the long history of East Africa and a tourist land mark attraction. Fort Jesus which was build by the Portuguese in the 1593 for the purpose of their defense.(Entry to fort Jesus is optional and at a fee)
Adjacent to the fort Jesus is the Old Town inhabited by the Swahili, Arabs, Asians, Portuguese and British settlers. The town is rich in blend of cultures and architecture styles which was mainly influenced by the Coastal Trade and foreign occupation. Have a stroll in the old town and learn about the town, buy souvenirs, take photos or have coffee in the open-air coffee shops.
Thereafter, our tour guide then takes you to the OLDEST Market in Mombasa and the shops on Langoni Road where you find a fascinating variety of goods including produce, such as fruits and vegetables from local farms, spices, meats, textiles and even some unexpected items, both local and international, such as safari shoes by Bata, pseudo designer label jeans and unbranded clothing from western countries.
A stop over at the enormous elephant tusks commissioned in 1956 would follow. They are favourite landmarks in Mombasa, centrally located gigantic elephant tusks.They were initially commissioned to commemorate the visit of Princess Margaret (Queen Elizabeth’s sister) in 1956, when Kenya was still part of the British Empire The tusks are meant to represent the entrance to the city of Mombasa and were therefore to welcome Princess Margaret for her visit.
Finally, discover the Akamba Handicraft Village in Mombasa and learn more about the rich culture of the Akamba people. From beautifully carved wood sculptures to intricately woven baskets, this village is a haven for art enthusiasts. Experience the authentic craftsmanship and connect with local artisans as they showcase their skills passed down through generations. Delve into the captivating history, take part in interactive workshops, and bring home unique souvenirs that will forever you remind you of the spirit of Kenya.
End the tour at around 1230 hrs and proceed back to the hotel for lunch with your head full of beautiful memories.
